Harness Racing Special
To Debut on RFD-TV
Vigilante Films, Brittany Farms, and the Harness
Racing Museum and Hall of Fame
Join Together To Tell One of Racing's Greatest
Success Stories
BOZEMAN, MT, MARCH 14,
2005 - Vigilante Films of Bozeman, Montana,
Brittany Farms of Lexington, Kentucky, and the
Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame in Goshen,
New York, are pleased to announce that "Harness
Dreams," a television documentary about
one of harness racing's greatest success stories,
will premiere on RFD-TV March 31, 2005. The
show times are Thursday, March 31 at 4 p.m.
and 10 p.m. EST; Friday April 1 at 4 a.m. and
10 a.m. EST; and Sunday April 3 at 5:30 p.m.
EST. The show is carried on Dish Network channel
9409 and DirecTV channel 379.
The special focuses on
Blair and Karin Burgess, owners and trainers
of Real Desire, a horse who came from humble
beginnings but became one of the top-winning
pacers in history. Real Desire earned millions
before retiring to stud, and was ultimately
named Pacer of the Year and Horse of the Year
in 2002. The special also gives an overview
of the challenges and excitement inherent to
harness racing, and includes interviews from
some of the industry's top names-including John
Campbell, one of Real Desire's drivers, and
George Segal, the owner of Brittany Farms.
"We are very pleased
to join RFD-TV in presenting Harness Dreams,
and we hope that the show will create a lot
of excitement about harness racing both to those
already familiar with the sport as well as newcomers,"
said Stephen Ellis, executive producer for the
show. "When my colleague, Monica Thors,
suggested I include a show about Standardbreds
in the Horse Babies series, I thought it was
a wonderful idea. The Burgesses' story, which
is one of the all-time classics of harness racing,
was a perfect fit for this episode."
Horse Babies is an 8-week mini-series that features
owners and operators who are living out their
dreams with horses. The goal of the series is
to show the emotion and passion people have
for their horses and introduce the RFD-TV audience
to different breeds. So far, the series has
presented specials about Rocky Mountain Horses,
Tennessee Walkers, Arabian Horses, and Thoroughbreds.
Monica Thors, a distinguished equine photographer
and videographer based in Princeton, New Jersey,
is a harness racing trainer and driver herself
whose own passion and lifetime of experience
with harness racing spurred the development
of the documentary.
"Harness racing was
not meant to be part of the series," she
explained, "Steve called me to order photographs
for the series, and I asked him what the series
was about. He told me it was going to feature
different equine breeds. I asked him, 'Will
harness racing and Standardsbreds be featured?'
He said 'No,' and that's when I realized I needed
to talk him into doing a show on these athletic
and wonderful horses," she said.
"Steve came up for
the 2003 Hambletonian, and I introduced him
to harness racing," said Thors, "He
saw what an exciting and powerful sport it is.
From there, we joined up with Peter Gerry and
the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame,
and George Segal of Brittany Farms, who both
saw the value of making a show like this. Thanks
to their sponsorship, this documentary will
be broadcast nationwide on satellite television
and will also be shown at the Harness Racing
Museum and Hall of Fame in Goshen."
Real Desire began his racing career winning
8 of 10 starts at 2, establishing a world record
of 1:50.4 and earning nearly a half-million
dollars. He captured the $1,000,000 Meadowlands
Pace, Breeders Crown and Hoosier Cup at 3, earning
over $1.6-million that season, and capped his
brilliant career as a 4-year-old with another
Breeders Crown triumph and other FFA wins that
ultimately led to "Horse of the Year"
honors. He was the fastest pacer of the year
in his 4-year-old season (1:48.2) and retired
to stud with career earnings of over $3.1-million,
at the time ranking him the third-richest pacer
in history.
